- W2247205225 abstract "Multiple passes of the paver are normally used in hot mixed asphalt (HMA) pavement construction. Each pass typically results in one lane being laid down. There is formation, consequently, of a longitudinal construction joint between the constructed lanes. Water penetrating into the HMA layer would result from low density at the longitudinal joint, and damage the HMA mix and supporting layers. Premature flexible pavement failure is usually caused by water damage. Constructing a dense longitudinal joint to prevent water intrusion is one way to avoid such failures. Establishing the needed knowledge base for longitudinal joint specification development and implementation for the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) was the overall objective of this research. A field testing program was carried out for effectiveness evaluation of various joint geometry and compaction techniques in providing improved performance and increasing joint density. Two field testing programs were conducted to meet the research objective. Five joint geometries and two joint rolling techniques were evaluated in the summer of 2004 in these field programs. A summer 2005 field project evaluated the three most promising joint geometries that the summer 2004 program identified. Analysis of data the two field testing programs generated formed the basis of the recommendation that NDOT implement the following joint density specification: there should be a maximum of 2% less than the corresponding mat density in the joint density, and there should be a minimum of 90% of the theoretical maximum density at the joint density. The following conclusion can be reached by reviewing summer 2005 project data on joint densities and differences in joint and mat densities: the recommended joint density specification will be met by all three joint geometries: taper joint at 3:1, cut edge with rubberized tack coat, and natural slope." @default.
