- W2247255325 abstract "A rich relationship existed between small-scale devotional sculptures and interactive prints in Europe around the turn of the sixteenth century. Interactive memento mori prints in particular framed the dichotomy of the viewers' hope for eternal life and the inevitability of their death through the powerful before and after contrasts of flaps and dials. Death and its imagery pervaded the late medieval and early modern period, and art duly reflected the realities of this uncertain life. Death took center stage as increased printmaking possibilities allowed experimentation with multiple layers glued or sewn in place, whether hinged flaps like boxwood coffin lids, or dials turning slowly like the death's head beads. The memento mori remained an effective, pervasive and truly universal warning, regardless of the viewer's faith. Keywords:boxwood coffin lids; deadly art; death's head beads; devotional sculptures; interactive prints; memento mori prints" @default.
