- W2247274583 abstract "It is generally believed that poor communication is the main cause of managerial failure. The importance accorded to effective communication is evident from the fact that most newspaper advertisements inviting applications for diverse jobs mention ‘effective communication skills’ as a key prerequisite for eligibility. We conducted an elaborate study of interpersonal communication within selected organizations because we found that hardly any study on the subject had been conducted in India. We chose to investigate interpersonal communication within some of India’s best service sector organizations because effective communication is an important factor contributing to the quality of services provided by the organizations. This paper focuses on the communication effectiveness of the respondents who participated in the survey. We found significant relationships between the respondents’ perception of their effectiveness as communicators and the following variables: • The communication effectiveness of their boss • The communication effectiveness of other managers within the organization • Age • Awareness of what effective communication means • Awareness of the impact of physiological factors on communication effectiveness • Importance accorded to first impressions • Quality of interpersonal relations • Openness in communication • The ability to resolve conflicts, and • Tenure However, we did not find any significant relation between the respondents’ perception of their effectiveness as communicators and the following variables: • Listening skills • Awareness of the impact of managerial expectations on subordinate performance • Gender • Educational qualifications • Trust in communication • Number of subordinates, and • Number of promotions The communication effectiveness of managers within the organization was the most significant predictor of the respondents’ perception of their own effectiveness as communicators, followed by the importance accorded to first impressions, the quality of interpersonal relations within the organizations, and the ability to resolve conflicts." @default.
