- W2247292790 abstract "Archaeological investigations in the Barwon River drainage basin were undertaken in 1995 as part of the Statewide Survey Program of AAV. The primary objective of the Statewide Survey Program is to undertake archaeological investigations in river basins throughout Victoria. The river basin projects provide basic cultural heritage management information, improve our knowledge about Aboriginal life in the pre-contact period and offer archaeological training and experience for Aboriginal people. The Barwon Drainage Basin Archaeological Project had two main goals. The first was to describe the nature of Aboriginal archaeological sites, including the types of sites, their characteristics and preservation condition. Secondly, the distribution and density of sites across the landscape were to be investigated and discussed to the extent of developing predictive models of site distribution and density where appropriate. Previous archaeological projects in the Barwon Drainage Basin study area had been limited in scope and concentrated mainly on the Bellarine Peninsula. Almost all work was concerned with the discovery and recording of sites (site survey). Most of these projects were connected with the assessment of the impacts of developments on Aboriginal sites. Notable exceptions were several salvage excavations of Aboriginal burial sites. Outside of the Bellarine Peninsula, only the upper reaches of the Barwon have been previously examined by systematic archaeological survey. Amateur archaeologists and artefact collectors had been very active in the study area throughout this century, particularly near Inverleigh and on the Bellarine Peninsula. Such sustained removal of artefacts has undoubtedly distorted the archaeological record manifested on the ground surface, with the pecked and ground stone industry being especially under-represented. The present study focuses on three areas along the upper, middle and lower Barwon Basin (Figure 5). The upper Barwon and lower Barwon had previously been examined by archaeologists, while the middle Barwon had been largely neglected. Therefore, field survey was carried out in the vicinity of Inverleigh to provide information on this poorly known area. The original investigations at Inverleigh constitute the bulk of this study (Chapters 2-6), while the previously studied Bellarine Peninsula (Chapter 7) and upper Barwon (Otway Range) (Chapter 8) are reviewed in individual chapters. The last two chapters investigate the Aboriginal archaeology (Chapter 9) and cultural heritage management processes (Chapter 10) for the Barwon Drainage Basin." @default.
