- W224733336 abstract "Israeli Identity: In Search of a Successor to the Pioneer, Tsabar and Settler, by Lilly Weissbrod. London, UK and Portland, OR: Frank Cass, 2002. 242 pages. Bibl. to p. 254. Index to p. 256. $54.50. In the book under review, Lilly Weissbrod, who has contributed much to the study of Israeli politics and society, has provided an overview of Zionist and Israeli history from a special perspective: the development of ideological ideas through the last century. Her book centers upon a contemporary question that is painfully evident to most Israeli-Jews: the crisis of Israeli identity in the last decade. She depicts three major types of Zionist identities - the pioneer (halutz), the Tsabar, and the settler (i.e., the national-religious Gush Emunim settler of the Occupied Territories) - and explains their rise to prominence and subsequent demise. Weissbrod presents a rieh panoramic view of the various ideologies that have motivated the Zionist Jews to action and thus provides the reader with a basis for comprehending the nature of the identity crisis that Israel is currently undergoing. This wide angle that leads to insights regarding contemporary Israel is undoubtedly one of the books greatest contributions. The basic story that Weissbrod tells is one of change, decline, and crisis. Although this story has been told before, Weissbrod succeeds in telling it within a strong analytic framework and in a very clear and comprehensive way. After a long period characterized by a strong unifying national ethos that incorporated elements drawn from various role models, Israeli society and culture are marked today by what the author, interestingly, refers to as fractures (what others may prefer to call processes of sectorialization and privatization). Not surprisingly, the opening pages of the book tell of the key event of the Declaration of Principles signed between Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) in 1993 (the Oslo agreement). Thereafter, the rifts within Jewish Israeli identity manifested themselves in the most violent form, leading to the assassination of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin in 1995. This study is based on intensive research within the field of Political Science, broadly defined. Weissbrod analyzes political ideologies, tracks party amalgamations and divisions, and relates these developments to public opinion polls. On the whole, methodologically, the author succeeds in supplying a rich narrative of the fluctuations in Israeli polity. …" @default.
