- W2247337311 abstract "This paper empirically analyzes whether the growth of public sector size in Europe over the past few decades reects ecient responses to a changing economic and social environment or whether it indicates an increase in wasteful spending. To this end, the eect of government involvement on subjective well-being is estimated in a panel of 15 European countries ranging from 1995 till 2005. The investigation reveals that this eect depends on factors such as people’s trust in the national government, federalism and government eectiveness, whereas government ideology and the extent of participatory democracy and corruption at best play a weak role in this relationship. Secondly, it appears that the government’s ability to promote people’s well-being diers across several areas of intervention. Social protection expenditures have an inversely U-shaped relationship with well-being, while health expenditures have a signicantly negative impact even when controlling for health status. Finally, a low or a high amount of public education expenditures maximize well-being." @default.
