- W2247406344 abstract "The current seismic design rules in the Australian bridge code, similar to those of AS 1170.4, are based on the Force-Based Design Method (FBDM). The FBDM uses generalised acceleration spectra to determine the relevant seismic design actions. However, the use of forces rather than displacements to simulate seismic actions does not reflect the true behavior of structures. New seismic design rules for bridges have now been issued as a draft and are intended to be submitted to Standards Australia for incorporation into the revision of bridge design code, AS 5100:2004, currently underway. The new rules propose an alternative approach, namely, the Displacement-Based Design Method (DBDM). The DBDM assesses the effects of seismic events by considering displacements and strains of the deformed structural elements in contrast to the FBDM approach which only considers forces and subsequent design action effects. The DBDM enables designers to predict a structure's behaviour and/or damage from the design seismic event, and provides a tool to check whether a structure can be exempted from specific seismic design provisions. The DBDM concepts and procedure are outlined in this paper. The new seismic rules also brought several conceptual changes to the current design and detailing of bridges, which apply regardless of the design method used. The changes include revised detailing provisions of bridge concrete piers, which are also summarized in this paper." @default.
