- W2247474837 abstract "Experiments to investigate loads from ridge keels on structures have been performed at Hamburgische Schiffbau-Versuchsanstalt (HSVA) in Germany in scale 1:20. The main results of the interaction tests and a description of the ridges are given in Parts I and II respectively. The shear strength of freeze bonds is investigated in Part IV. The present paper (Part III) reports the tests performed to characterize the mechanical properties of the model ice keels. The tests included seven punch tests, “retaining wall” tests, oedometer tests and two piling tests. The time series from the retaining wall tests showed that the plate load correlated to the penetration speed. Some oscillations were visible in the time series for the tests runs where the upper part of the ridge was left intact. A wedge extrusion was observed in the test run 1000. The oedometer test showed the behaviour typical for a loose soil and volumetric strains up to 30% were recorded. The Young modulus of the rubble was estimated. The volumetric hardening evolution of the isotropic yield stress was measured and it was shown that the volumetric elastic strains in the model rubble were negligible with regard to the volumetric plastic strains. The repose angle, critical angle and failure angle were similar for the two rubble piling tests. The critical angle was higher than the repose angle, indicating that cohesion could have developed in a short period of time." @default.
