- W2247482691 abstract "Oil palm shell, a solid waste of palm oil industry in Malaysia was used as a raw material for the production of micro- and mesoporous activated carbons. The chemical activation process with different impregnating agents (65 % zinc chloride, 85 % phosphoric acid and 85 % potassium hydroxide) was conducted at various temperatures, under the purified nitrogen and carbon dioxide condition. The physical characteristics of activated carbon were estimated from nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherm data at 77 K and on the relative pressure range of 0.005-0.99. The highest BET surface areas of the activated carbons were 1367 m2 g-1, 1917 m2 g-1 and 2205 m2 g-1 obtained from 65 % zinc chloride, 85 % phosphoric acid and 85 % potassium hydroxide impregnation, respectively. The activated carbon prepared by zinc chloride impregnation exhibited type I isotherm, typical characteristic for the essential micropores. Meanwhile, the activated carbon prepared by phosphoric acid and potassium hydroxide impregnation showed a combination of Type I and Type IV isotherm with a significant hysteresis loops, representing to the characteristics of micro- and mesopores, respectively. The micropore volume and the pore size distribution were evaluated by applying the Dubinin-Radushkevich and the Dubinin-Astakhov methods respectively. The highest micropore volume were 0.74, 0.77 and 1.31 cm3 g-1 obtained from the activated carbon prepared by impregnation with zinc chloride, phosphoric acid and potassium hydroxide, respectively. The pore size distributions according to the n value of all the activated carbon were less then 2 indicating the heterogeneous micropore with wide size porosity. The SEM photographs of the activated carbon showed the existence of the porosity with different structural morphology." @default.
