- W2247644632 abstract "INTRODUCTION. Motor skill competence is considered a key determinant of physical activity (PA) participation. Because physical inactivity is currently one of the leading health risk behaviors related to the obesity epidemic [1], motor skill competence could also be an important factor in the obesity problem [2]. However, the relationship between motor competence and childhood overweight (OW) and obesity (OB) has received little attention from a longitudinal point of view. Therefore, this study investigates the relationship between OW and OB, motor competence and PA in elementary school children over a 4-year period.METHODS. Two hundred eighty elementary school children participated in this study (149 boys, 131 girls). Anthropometric measures and gross motor coordination were assessed twice with a 4-year interval. Gross motor coordination was evaluated by means of the Korperkoordinationstest fur Kinder (KTK) [3], through which an overall motor quotient (MQ) was obtained. At baseline, children were assigned to the normal-weight (n=238; NW) or OW/OB (n=42) group according to the IOTF cutoff points relative to age and gender [4]. At follow-up, the Flemish Physical Activity Questionnaire was used to determine children’s PA levels [5]. Independent samples t-Test and Repeated Measure ANOVA were used to explore differences in motor competence according to weight status (NW vs. OW/OB).RESULTS. Children with OW/OB at baseline had a significantly lower average motor competence than NW children at both test moments (p<0.001). The MQ of all children was lower on the second test moment (p<0.001). But the MQ of the NW children shows less decrease (p=0.031) in a 4-year period (baseline: 98.88 ± 13.02 vs. follow-up: 95.64 ± 13.59) compared with the MQ of the OW/OB children (baseline: 90.33 ± 15.24 vs. follow-up: 83.29 ± 17.65). Regarding PA measures, children with OW/OB at baseline spend significantly (p= 0.029) less time on sports (253 min/week ± 165) than NW children (335 min/week ± 199) four years later.DISCUSSION. These data suggest that body composition at baseline is a predictor of motor competence and the degree of PA four years later. Being OW or OB is detrimental for a child’s motor competence. Therefore, targeted motor skill initiatives have to be implemented, especially among OW/OB children. Improving the motor competence level of these children could be an appropriate strategy to reduce OW/OB and to promote PA participation. However, the importance of motor competence as a gateway to improve PA levels of OW/OB children still warrants greater investigation." @default.
