- W2247647669 abstract "In order to extract the content of an expression, another expression must be used, which in turn carries another content that can be manifested as another expression, thus establishing a linking chain of signifiers. As long as the content of an expression is possible of being manifested through other signifiers, we have established the conditions for an unlimited process of semiosis. This chapter analyzes how the semiosis process begins and finishes with an interpretive act. We will show that despite the fact that this process may be exercised to the limits of linguistic creativity, the interpretive act shall have text, context, and circumstances as the parameters guiding the production of discourse. The margin for interpreting a specific sign – besides being governed by circumstances and linguistic context – is fixed in a code adopted by the subjects in a communicative relation. The code can often be decisive in defining which reading shall be made. The code can also promote a greater or lesser stability in the deduction of denotations and connotations in the message. The more a code is known, recognized and shared by a social group, the more stable it will be. The code will also have a greater chance of promoting consensus regarding the contents it conveys in communicative processes, and, consequently, the code will be less likely to result in decontextualized meaning. We will illustrate how the legal code is one of the parameters that determine the possibilities of meaning in a text and the importance of interpretation." @default.
