- W2247683464 abstract "This article has been subjected to double blind peer review Experience of pain is one of the main reasons patients seek emergency care (Tanabe 1995), yet there has been little research into pain assessment and management for older adults in emergency departments (EDs). There is evidence to suggest that patients in EDs in general receive inadequate pain control (Tanabe 1995) and are dissatisfied with pain relief (Britten and Shaw 1994). Other studies suggest that older patients in acute settings rarely have their pain managed effectively (Closs et al 1993). It seems fair to conclude therefore that older patients receiving emergency care are at risk of inadequate pain management and of the complications associated with unrelieved pain (Briggs 2002, Closs 1996). People aged over 60 now make up 21 per cent of the population (Office for National Statistics 2002) and the government’s current focus is on improving all areas of care for older people (Department of Health 2001). So it is pertinent to examine why this problem exists and how emergency nurses can help alleviate it. The case studies in this art ic le demonstrate common problems affecting the assessment of pain in older adults and how these can be overcome." @default.
