• W2247683512 abstract "In recent years, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have begun to play a bigger role in conflict management efforts, especially in civil wars. In this paper we examine the role of reputation as a motivating factor in the behavior of NGO mediators. To do so, we develop a principal-agent model of the interaction between donors and NGOs. NGOs face constant pressure to maintain revenues from donors in order to survive and pursue policy goals. Donors, on the other hand, want to invest wisely in NGOs that are capable of policy success. Our theoretical model indicates that reputation can influence the decision to fund an NGO mediator. Even though effort is difficult to observe, its relationship to success suggests that competent NGOs must repeatedly invest high effort to maintain their reputation. Mediation successes provide meaningful signals of competence to donors, who then reward these signals with funds. A competent NGO will invest significant resources in the maintenance of its reputation, and the possibility of changes in competence means donors never stop caring about this reputation.
