- W2249210322 abstract "Emulsions of oil and water play an important role in enhanced oil recovery (EOR) methods. Such emulsions may form in the porous medium as a result of fluid-fluid interactions, or may be prepared and injected into the porous medium for oil displacement via lowered interfacial tension and improved diaplacement efficiency. Several types of emulsions, both oil-in-water and water-in-oil types, were prepared, using petroleum sulfonates, sodium hydroxide and commercial surfactants, as stabilizers, and several crude oils as the oleic phase. The emulsions were characterized for viscosity-shear, drop size distribution, etc. Following this, flow tests were carried out in porous media, in which a particular emulsion was made to flow through a porous medium of given pore size distribution. The produced emulsion was characterized, and compared with the injected. The oil recovery ability of the emulsion was also examined. It was found that the properties of the emulsion produced in a flow experiment depened on the injection velocity and the type of emulsion. As oil' recovery agents, emulsions are more effective than a surfactant or sodium hydroxide. In tertiary floods, recoveries of up to 40% of the oil remaining after a waterflood were possible. Results are compared with those for micellar solutions, also studied by the authors for similar rock-fluid systems." @default.
