- W2249702669 abstract "K.K. KUNJIPALU*, N. SUBRAMANIA PILLAI*and M.R. BOOPENDRANATH*Veraval Research Centre of Central Institute of Fisheries Technology, Veraval - 362 265Results of performance evaluation of a 25 m six panelled high opening trawl arepresented. Comparative find trials with one boat high opening trawl of the Bay ofBengal Programme (EOBP) with 360 meshes of 160 mm mesh size and 25 .6 m head ropelength have indicated an overall efficiency of 9 .2 % for thesixpanelled high opening trawlover BOBP high opening trawl. The six panelled high opening trawl showed a very highefficiency of 80% in the catch of quality fishes over BOBP trawl. It has also shown anincrease over BOBP trawl in the catch of other fin fishes and shell fishes except Lactariussp. and sciaenids. Suitability of the gear for improved harvesting of bottom and offbottom resources on the north west coast of India are discussed.Bottom trawls designed to attain relativelyhigh vertical opening are increasingly popularfor harvesting bottom and off bottom fishes. An eight panelled high opening trawl testedby Kunjipalu et al. (1984) was found to behighly successful for exploitation of offbottom resources on the north west coast.Pajot and Crocket (1980) have reportedefficient performance of high opening trawlsalong the south east coast of India. In the present study, performance of a25 m six panelled high opening trawl develo-ped at Veraval Research Centre of CentralInstitute of Fisheries Technology is evaluatedthrough comparative field trials along witha BOBP high opening trawl off Veraval, north west coast of India.Materials and M-Ahod3Design details of 25 m six panelled highopening trawl with large meshes of 150 mmsize is the foreparts, is given in Fig . 1. Atwo panelled high opening trawl of the BOBPdesign with 25.6 m head rope length des* Present address: Central Institute of Fisheries Tech-nology, Cochin - 682 029Vol. 27, 1990cribed by Pajot & Crocket (1980) was opera-ted for comparative observations. Generalparticulars of both the trawls are given inTable 1.Flat rectangular otter boards of woodand steel construction of size 1524 x 762 mmweighing 100 kg each described by Kuriyanet al. (1964) were used in combination with5 m double bridles. Field trials were con-ducted from the research vessel Fish TechNo. 8 of 15.2 m OAL fitted with 165 HPengine. Observations were conducted inthe depth range of 28 to 44 m off Veraval, during day time in 1984-'85. The two trawlswere operated alternately on each fishingday so as to give equal chances by main-taining same depth, duration, direction oftow and engine revolutions during each setof comparative hauls. Horizontal spreadbetween the otter boards was estimatedusing the method suggested by Ben-yami(1959) and Deshpande (1960) and towingtension on the warps was measured by amechanical tension meter described bySatyanarayana & Nair (1965). Operationaldetails are given in Table 2." @default.
