The use of s. rostrata in agriculture was studied. On-fann experiments were conducted for several years in Casamance, using S. rostrata for green manure in rice cultivation. By using finalized inoculation techniques in the field, and by optimally including this green manure in farming practices, rice production has risen over the years from 1.7 to 4 tons per hectare, without adding nitrogen-enriched fertilizers. We showed that when S. rostrata is used as green manure, if could practically replace nitrogen fertilizers in the Senegalese ricefields. It is important for fanners to be made aware of this infonnation. Through basic research, and by using photonic and electronic microscopy and cytology, we were able to elucidate the various stages of nodule fonnation in tropicallegumes. Sesbania rostrata infection, thus, is characterized by a mode of infection that includes intercellular invasion by the bacteria and then the fonnation ofpockets of intercellular infection threads of infection that develop from these pockets. We also discovered an original mode of Azorhizobium release in the cytoplasm ofthe host cell and a type ofnodular development that has never before been described for a legume.
