- W2251472127 abstract "The World Health Organization (WHO) points to suicide as a public health problem with growing demand to health services. For every suicide, it is estimated that 10 to 20 attempts are practiced, to which service will be performed in urgency and emergency services by professional working in these units. Thus, given the increased demand and the need to discuss the topic in health services, this research aimed to understand the meanings given by health professionals to suicide attempts answered by them, in the context of emergency and hospital emergencies. To this end, sixteen health professionals were interviewed, four of them for each of the following professional backgrounds: psychology, medicine, social work and nursing. The data analysis was performed based on the tabulation of informations from the questionnaires and content analysis of the interviews, which resulted in the four categories and their respective subcategories and analysis elements. The results show a polarization of meanings attributed to suicide. The first sees suicide as a condition of suffering, in which are observed a number of weaknesses and unfavorable conditions justifying the suicide attempt, making health professionals adopt welcoming attitudes towards patients seen. The second understanding, while recognizing the condition of psychological distress, means the phenomenon as an affront to professional practice, for which attendance does not fit the remit of health services surveyed. On the service provided, there was a predominance of female audience, intoxication as the most used method and the presence of troubled and/or unstable relationships or contexts which act as trigger for the attempts. Also, attempts to draw attention, named fake suicide attempts are the more frequent demands in the service and cited as a difficulty to attend the patient. About the care provided, it is emphasized that health services surveyed have minimum protocols for care for the patient that reaches the unit for attempted suicide, although aspects are observed such as different perspectives on suicide and inappropriate demand for services, which explanation may be related the training of each professional. And finally, the referrals made by professionals are given from the risk assessment performed. However, even though professionals are engaged in the task of ensuring the continuity of care or treatment of the patient in the network, weaknesses were observed in the health system, such as few options available for referral and consequent difficulty absorbing all the directed demand. Thus, it is clear that the meanings that people give to different aspects of their daily lives have influences on their actions. Therefore, it is urgent to think of strategies that can manage to prevent suicide while offering knowledge that leads to a look less guided by judgments and moral rules. This look about suicide would allow the person in psychological distress to be better welcomed in any context and consequently had the best chances of recovery and social" @default.
