- W2252645469 abstract "Methods of natural family planning (also called the rhythm method or the method of periodic abstinence) occupy 4th place in the hierarchy of birth control methods after the birth control pill IUD and condom. 3 devices for helping women determine time of ovulation are described. The device Ovu-Test 77 produced in West Germany uses a probe to determine electrolytic changes in cervical mucus caused by the protein uteroglobulin. Fertility is indicated on a display. The Anne device made in Taiwan measures temperature. The reading is used according to the Ogino rule i.e. last infertile day in the post-menstrual period = shortest cycle minus 19 days. Any temperature rise is not interpreted and there is no indication of postovulatory infertile days. The 3rd device Rite Time uses the Royston principle likewise a temperature method. The device computes the postovulatory temperature rise and indicates the infertile days. Evaluation of each device indicated high failure rates. Poor performance of Ovu-Test 77 may be attributed to the fact that existence of uteroglobulin has not been proven. Anne was found to be less a cycle computer than an electric thermometer with storage of temperature values of 12 cycles. The start of the postovulatory infertile phase indicated by Rite Time varied from 4 days earlier to 6 days later than the time determined using symptothermal methods considered reliable in many respects. All in all none of these devices is regarded as suitable for birth control." @default.
