- W2253319540 abstract "Two years have passed since the introduction of a new course of study for the elementary school in Japan; but there are few cases of the practice of mathematical modelling. If the teacher training course does not aim at early education in the elementary school, it will be difficult to infiltrate the education content from elementary school to senior high school. The activity such as drawing figures is effective to stimulate students having images of some mathematical model. Children generate ideas by fitting triangles, rectangles and circles together. Therefore we gave eight Year 5 and 6 students a problem to solve the maximum figure passing through an L-shaped lane. This matches the image of the real phenomenon of a person with big baggage passing through such a corridor corridor. In addition, the greatest model becomes an introduction to quadratic function. In elementary school, students learn one to one correspondence to prepare for function education; but they usually treat only easy cases such as linear function that is an easy real phenomenon. However, they can learn about quadratic function with simple experiments and training. Meanwhile, the trial and error to get the most suitable figure will be equivalent to mathematical modelling. Function calculators should be used to relieve complicated calculations. Some university students supported the students as assistants. Through this lesson and presentation by children, the thinking and argumentation became active. But various problems became clear, too. It seems that it is difficult for children to make a new figure by adding and pruning other one. The improvement of function and figure education in the future in Japan is an expected outcome.
