- W2253788616 abstract "As Dr. hsiang-Tung Chang approached his late 80s, he began the task of sorting and compiling all of his scientific writings into volumes. He later acknowledged that he was initially ambivalent about the idea when colleagues first suggested it to him, but quickly came to believe that the effort should be seen as beyond his own personal interest and significance, and that the archives would be of good value from both the scientific and historical perspectives. On the opening page of the completed volumes, Chang devoted the entire space to a single-sentence quote – printed in bolded large font in english as well as in Chinese translation – by British physiologist ernest h. Starling about the neurophysiologist Keith Lucas: “his whole life was in his work and so the work reveals the man”. Dr. Chang’s whole life was indeed consumed in his scientific inquiries, and the work he did speaks volumes of his scientific achievements and reveals a man as a leading giant of neuroscience research in modern China. Since the volumes compiled in 1997, in celebrating Dr. Chang’s 90th birthday, were bound-printed not through a commercial publishing entity, only a limited number of copies have been produced and distributed – mainly to a few libraries in domestic institutions and scores of Chang’s students, colleagues, and friends. To provide an opportunity of better appreciating Chang’s lifetime accomplishments, we are publishing here the list of contents of the five volumes of “Collected Papers of Hsiang-Tung Chang” [1], in the hope that this will further make future access to this archive and its related information, or any follow-up search, relatively easier. To accompany the bibliography of Chang’s papers, we have also included here the preface he prepared for the volumes. Also included is the foreword for the volumes, written by Dr. Chien-Ping Wu, Chang’s student and close colleague for nearly half a century. Wu summarizes the major contributions Chang has made in different scientific areas, and in different stages of Chang’s scientific career. he especially highlights Chang’s accomplishments that have received international recognitions [2–4], either as conceptually groundbreaking effort such as that on the function of cortical neuron’s dendrites, or as significant milestone work contributing to our current understandings in areas such as cortical motor output, classifications of afferent fibers in muscle nerves, thalamo-cortical reverberate circuit, evoked potentials, and acupuncture analgesia. As shown in Chang’s bibliography, his research productivity began soon after his graduation from the National University of Peking and prior to his leaving for US for his Ph.D. study at Yale University. His publications during that period were mostly single-authored, all written in english (with Chinese abstracts), of studies on topics covering auditory, visual, and sensorimotor systems. Particularly notable from that period are the three well-prepared manuscripts and a set of meticulously drawn anatomical atlas of monkey brains, which have never been published (see manuscripts 6, 7, 8, 9 listed in appendix 3, Bibliography of hsiang-Tung Chang’s Scientific Papers). According to Chang, these long and detailed manuscripts and data sets were completed on studies conducted during consecutive relocations in the face of the Japanese invasion, especially after the fall of nanking in 1938. Some of these papers were separated from Chang and thought to be lost amongst the chaotic retreating situations, but miraculously survived and were reunited with their author many years after the war. One can discern from Chang’s bibliography another clear hiatus in his otherwise sustained high productivity; these gaps clearly show the impact that the circumstances of the war and periods of social and political instabilities have had on" @default.
