- W2254532932 abstract "It is now generally accepted that linguistic theory provides some insights into the interpretation and evaluation of literary texts despite the fact that it is often argued that linguists rarely offer concrete guidelines that might be useful in objectivizing the literary analyst's impressions. However, although Halliday, Leech, and others have adopted the linguistic approach in their stylistic studies, the sociolinguistic aspects of literary texts have received little or no attention. It is true that literary critics often examine the social setting of literary texts, but the recent findings of sociolinguistics have not featured prominently in the current studies in linguistic stylistics. This essay examines the stylistic effect of one sociolinguistic phenomenon: pidginization. It is assumed here that the implications of the sociolinguistic definition of pidginization are of great relevance in the study of style in African writing in English, particularly when analyzing the stylistic use to which the English-based pidgin spoken in West Africa is put in the writings of Chinua Achebe and Wole Soyinka. West African Pidgin English (PE) as exemplified in the passages quoted is spoken primarily along the West African coast between Sierra Leone and Cameroon. The exact number of speakers is unknown, but there are probably at least five million speakers of PE in Nigeria, one of the major centers where the language is extensively used. The type of Pidgin found in literary works by Achebe, Ekwensi, Soyinka, and some other African writers is not the same as that often referred to as trade" @default.
