- W2255127968 abstract "The ratios of several coexisting minerals in three pelitic schists from the Lincoln Mountain quadrangle, Vermont, have been measured, using a fluorine-extraction technique. The three mineral assemblages are: (1) kyanite-chloritoid-chlorite-muscovite-paragonite-quartz-rutile, (2) chloritoid-almandine-chlorite-muscovite-paragonite-quartz-ilmenite, and (3) almandine-biotite-chlorite-muscovite-albite-quartz-ilmenite-graphite. Mineralogically and texturally these rocks appear to be equilibrium assemblages, and they represent possible compatible assemblages in rocks of somewhat different chemical composition at the same metamorphic grade. The rocks were collected within 200 meters of one another from two metasedimentary formations of different gross composition. The area is a simple regional metamorphic terrane uncomplicated by intrusives; thus field evidence also suggests that these rocks are probably of identical metamorphic grade. In each assemblage quartz has the highest ratio, followed in consistent order by albite, white mica, kyanite, chlorite, biotite, and ilmenite; chloritoid, rutile, and garnet were not analyzed. Within the experimental error, a particular mineral has the same oxygen-isotopic composition regardless of which assemblage it occurs in ; hence the isotopic fractionation factors among the minerals are also identical for the three schists. These data suggest that oxygen-isotopic equilibrium was established during metamorphism and was attained at the same temperature for all three rocks. Also, identical ratios for a particular mineral in all three rocks indicate oxygen-isotopic exchange occurred between all three rocks. A reasonable explanation is that equilibration occurred with a widespread oxygen-bearing fluid of relatively constant ratio." @default.
