- W2255423009 abstract "Cannabis Sativa (Marijuana or MJ) is the most widely used illicit drug in the United States. The drug affects a widely distributed population of endocannabinoid receptors which have roles in synaptic plasticity and learning, especially during crucial developmental phases like adolescence, often when cannabis usage begins. Cannabis consumption is associated with numerous adverse acute and chronic physical and mental health effects and neurocognitive decline, and since cannabis usage often begins during such a critical neurodevelopmental period, it is imperative that marijuana and its neural impact be better understood. A number of studies have examined the cognitive, neurovascular and neuroanatomical changes in cannabis using populations, but there have been relatively few studies examining neurochemical changes. In this study, in vivo levels of cerebral metabolites (NAA, mI, Cr, Cho, Glu) were quantified via MR spectroscopy. In this study the relationship between NAA, which is related to cell health, and grey matter volume was examined. The study included 43 subjects between the ages of 18 to 35 who were scanned using a Siemens 3-T TIM TRIO MRI scanner. We obtained anatomical and MRS data for 29 of the 43 subjects enrolled in the study. 10 subjects were non marijuana using controls, 4 subjects were former users (>1 yr .abstinence), and 15 subjects were current marijuana users (>1 usage event per week). Lower levels of NAA were found in the ACC of marijuana users compared to healthy controls. Additionally, a negative correlation was found between NAA (N-acetylaspartate) levels in the ACC (anterior cingulate cortex) and grey matter volumes in the NAc (nucleus accumbens), amygdala, and the cerebellum in particular. The results suggest that cannabis users have increased grey matter volume in these regions, a finding that is consistent with previous studies.
