- W2256356118 abstract "One of the challenges to be faced in courses of mathematical modeling is the development of abilities in a way to improve students’ performance in the subject of mathematics. In this paper we present part of the results of a research project which focuses on the development of abilities and knowledge about the concepts and properties of numerical sequences and series from modelling activities. In the process of mathematical modelling, students analyse information, use different ways of representation, formulate problems, elaborate models and search for solutions, formulate and justify conjectures, analyse and interpret the results and also, gain knowledge and different abilities. Research studies by Stieler and Bisognin (2011) and Bisognin and Bisognin (2012) have shown that mathematical modelling can provide a favorable environment for the acquisition of different mathematical abilities. The research participants were students of a graduation course who took part in a workshop which had mathematical modelling as the teaching method. We used qualitative research methodology to collect and analyse data, which were obtained through observation, interviews and analysis of the material produced.
