- W2257183405 abstract "Abstract Specific features and the engineering background of seismic response analysis of high arch dams in severe seismic regions are described. The geometrically nonlinear features of contraction joints due to the opening and slipping during strong earthquakes significantly affect the seismic responses of arch dams. A method to solve this problem is suggested based on the dynamic contact theory, in which both the normal and shear contact forces can be considered, and the contact conditions of nonpenetrating and with Mohr–Coulomb shear strength in tangential slipping can be satisfied in a single step without iteration. Also, any assumption of the coefficients of stiffness and the penetration of the joint interfaces can be avoided. Besides, the width of any initial opening of the joint can be easy taken into account as well. For seismic response analysis of arch dam-foundation-reservoir water system, a 3-D finite element model method developed and widely used in China is introduced. In this model, all the following critical factors are considered simultaneously as close to reality as possible, such as the dynamic interaction of dam-foundation-reservoir water system, the opening and slipping of dam contraction joints during the earthquake, the topographical features and geological disturbances including critical potential sliding blocks of near-field foundation, the radiation damping of far-field foundation using artificial transmitting boundaries or spring-viscous boundaries, and also the spatial variation of seismic input along the dam foundation interface. Based on the dam engineering practice and results of current researches, the compressibility of reservoir water might be neglected and to treat the hydrodynamic pressure in terms of added mass at upstream dam surface, especially for rivers with heavy sedimentation in China. The whole system meshed in space by finite elements and in time by central finite differences is solved as a wave propagation problem by explicit integration in time domain." @default.
