It is not merely that its study furthers the understanding of the place of economics in society and culture in the region as well as the exploration of regional contributions to economic growth on the sub continent during recent centuries; the theme also raises fundamental questions regarding methodology and even the proper subject of socio-cultural research. Whereas the over whelming majority of anthropological and ethno-historical studies strive for an 'interior' view of the nature of consensus (even consensus on the rules of conflict) within human groups, as if the origins and meaning of social institutions and cultural singularities could only be approached from within the interactions of kin and small community, long-distance trade requires other perspectives. It is true that inquiries into such trade networks are also studies of ethnic diasporas1.
