- W2258139044 abstract "The copro-necrophagous fly Lucilia sericata (Diptera: Calliphoridae) plays an important role in ecology and medical, veterinary and forensic sciences due to its saprophagous habits. In diurnal insects, vision like smell is essential for spatial localization. In this work electrophysiological responses of the compound eyes and behavioral reactions to different light wavelengths were recorded under laboratory conditions in L. sericata. Electroretinograms from compound eyes of males and females were carried out to test the effect of different light wavelengths. Results showed a dichromatic vision with peaks around blue (450 nm) and green (510-530 nm) wavelengths. Two-sided light tunnel was used to test in males and females the attraction of blue, red and white light sources at different intensities (0.34, 0.15 and 0.034 μW/cm2). Behavioral experiments showed that both sexes are attracted mainly to blue, white and red lights, respectively. In addition, attraction to light sources was reduced by a reduction in stimulus intensity. Electrophysiological and behavioral results suggest that L. sericata should under field conditions interact with the environment by using the visible wavelengths mainly reflected by nature." @default.
