- W225851607 abstract "A dehydrogenase reaction with tetrazolium as the hydrogen acceptor and steroids as the substrate was used as a histochemical technique to identify steroidogenic tissues in the developing chick embryo. A reaction with dehydroepiandrosterone or pregnenolone occurs in sections of the primordial adrenal gland at 5 days and in the gonads at 9 days. The intensity of the reaction in the adrenal tissue reaches a maximum betweeen 11 and 12 days. In the developing ovary, the reaction is most intense in the medullary sex cords. A reaction with testosterone occurs in the cells of the primary albuginea and stroma of the ovary at 13 days and in the interstitial cells of the testis at 19 days. No reaction occurs with estradiol-17β. These histochemical findings would suggest an early steroidogenic property for the primordial adrenal gland. There are qualitative differences in steroid dehydrogenase activity among the cells of the ovary; the primary albuginea-stromal cells reacting most intensively with testosterone, while the cells of the medullary sex cords react with pregnenolone and dehydroepiandrosterone. Gonadal cells with steroid dehydrogenase activity develop earlier in the female than in the male chick embryo." @default.
