- W2258688375 abstract "This study describes the marriage process in the Turkana District of the Rift Valley Province in northwestern Kenya among the 10000 mostly nomadic herders (Ngisonyoka Turkana). Marriage is important in providing reliable labor for herd management. Living conditions reflect a high demand for labor. Fieldwork has been conducted since the 1970s and as recently as 1993. Statistical data collection is hampered by the high level of mobility and genealogical records that begin at marriage. Data for this study are based on the reconstruction of genealogies of 63 South Turkana herd-owners born between about 1863 and 1917 and the descendants of the fathers of successful pastoralists. The total sample includes 11224 men and women some of whom had died or migrated out of the pastoral sector. The analysis of female marriage behavior is based on the genealogical sample of all females (2995) who had reached marriageable age. The Turkana are known for their remarkable memory of places and events. Descriptions are given of Turkana marriage practices the marriage process premarital sexual relations and childbearing types of premarital semistable sexual patterns and age at first union. This research is predicated on the fact that quantitative questions such as Are you married? are not very helpful in revealing the diversity in existing marital relations. This studys findings reveal the negotiability and dynamics of both marital and nonmarital union formation and the implications for women and children. A womans marital status becomes more uncertain with a premarital birth. The social welfare of women and children is related to marital status through access to herds and residence. Other factors influencing the formation of a cohabiting union include temporary hardship conditions and pressure from brothers to marry off sisters in order to use the bridewealth payments for their marriages." @default.
