- W2258722428 abstract "Frozen human semen are used for artificial insemination storage of desired genetic characteristics for studies in vitro fertilization and for biomedical purposes among other things. Conception rate is from 50-60% compared with 70-75% for fresh semen. A major problem in freezing human semen is the lack of an ideal cryoprotective medium. The freezing-thawing process produces cellular changes (leakage of enzymes from the acrosome area loss of adenosine triphosphate due to midpiece damage) and also affects the motility of sperms. It is important to culture ejaculates for sperm freezing because of the risk of gonorrhea transfer (Neisseria gonorrhoeae has been found in semen samples). Precaution should also be taken not to mix the husbands semen with donors semen as this can be detrimental to conception. Sperm banking has not been widely accepted by both public and physicians due to lack of interest cost of maintaining frozen semen and lower conception rates. Further research on proper timing of various stages of freezing physics of low temperature biochemical changes and physiology of germ cells as related to cryobiology better methods of cryopreservation and long-term studies on the offsprings from frozen gametes to assure lack of subsequent genetic damage should be undertaken." @default.
