- W22588424 abstract "Elucidation of the molecular structure and function of multisubunit membrane proteins capable of complex functions, like the receptors for neurotransmitters, requires their purification in relatively large amounts, both to obtain direct information on their physicochemical and functional characteristics and to permit isolation and identification of their precursor genes. This is a formidable task to perform on any brain receptor, including the one(s) for acetylcholine and nicotine, because of the agonizingly low amounts present and the difficult isolation of active, intact form of these intrinsic membrane proteins in the presence of large amounts of endogenous proteases. A lot is known about the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (AChR) present in peripheral tissues (see below), such as the electric organs of Torpedo and Electrophorus, and the muscle of different species, including mammals and, hopefully in the near future, man." @default.
