• W2258864723 abstract "Modeling and simulation are an important part of the development and refinement of technical systems. For the purpose of this thesis, models describe the simplified behavior of a system using mathematical equations. A simulation determines the specific behavior of the model for a given time period, which allows conclusions to be drawn concerning the behavior of the real system. During an observation period, technical systems often go through several phases. For example, an airplane moves on the runway, then takes off, and then remains at a constant altitude. The equations of interest describing the behavior differ across these phases, meaning simulation with a single model is often insufficient. This thesis deals with models that go through different phases during simulation and thus can represent the real phases in more detail. The phases are represented by modes that are themselves models and describe each phase mathematically. The model can switch between these modes depending on circumstances. A model that consists of multiple modes and allows for transitions between them is called a variable-structure model. In today’s simulation tools, the handling of variable-structure models is still limited. The properties, modeling concepts, and advantageous uses of these models are currently not well known. In order to investigate the benefits of variable-structure models, the application areas for these models are identified. Concepts for building variable-structure models are introduced, along with ways to use them in the application areas advantageously. Hierarchical and modular modelling is considered in detail, to ensure the models are versatile and reusable. A formal model describes the semantics of variable-structure models and serves as a basis for their description and simulation. Based on this formalism, a prototypical framework DySMo (Dynamic Structure Modeling) is implemented. It serves to demonstrate the beneficial applications of variable-structure modeling by employing the concepts discussed in this thesis.
