- W22591039 abstract "The primary objective of the research work described was to obtain design information for a unit to be fitted in the induction system of spark ignition (SI) engines to provide a practical means of controlling cyclic combustion variation. Two important sets of relationships were subsequently investigated in detail: (1) the effects of design parameters on the operating limits imposed when using conventional fuels; and (2) the effects of design parameters on engine performance characteristics. The essential features and advantages of this turbulence controlled induction (TCI) process are discussed. The results show that: (1) greatly improved control of combustion in SI engines can be achieved by using a jetted grid mounted on the upstream surface of each inlet valve; (2) improved combustion control enables engines to be operated at ultra lean mixture strengths and at high compression ratios using standard gasoline; and (3) practical operation is made possible of a lean-burn engine with fuel economy comparable with that of diesel engines and with very low levels of exhaust emissions." @default.
