- W2260428691 abstract "A man in Delhi has beaten his own father to death with a wooden plank for disturbing the 37-year-old son while he was asleep on the terrace. There was a time when young Indians would care for their parents and grandparents in the family home, and disapprove of Westerners who farmed theirs out to retirement homes. Many Indians still do. The ideal of a harmonious, multigenerational household is now, however, coming into conflict with the economic pressures on young middle-class couples often with violent consequences. It is estimated that 40 per cent of elderly people living with their families now suffer some form of abuse. elders perceive abuse is important, as what professionals perceive as abuse may not be perceived as such by elders. How older people should be able to live safely and securely in their homes and community without fear of crime or harassment? Older people wish to live safe and secure lives both at home and in the community. However, crime and the fear of crime can also play a significant part in undermining the well-being of older people and can contribute to making people feel excluded from the community they live in. The fear of crime can also lead to isolation which can prevent older people from living active and fulfilling lives in the community. Crime policy involves addressing the adverse effects of crime on the lives of older people and developing ways to reduce and prevent the incidence of crime and the fear of crime. The main issue is the Fear of crime and the abuse of them by there own children's and also ways in which it affects the well-being of older people. Although there is less likelihood of older people becoming actual victims of crime, the fear of crime and abuse can have negative consequences on their health and general well-being. To promote a safe and secure environment Security at home and in the neighborhood plays a key role in the well-being of older people and there is a need to carefully consider the security needs of older people in the design of the built environment. While the chances of older people falling victim to crime are lower than for younger people, the consequences for those who become victims can be traumatic. There is a need to ensure that older victims of crime can have access to relevant and effective support systems within their communities. Older people's fear of crime is often attributed partly to the fact that they are not only perceived by society as vulnerable but have also been conditioned to perceive themselves in this manner. For example they may appear relatively physically defenseless and isolated, which makes them especially vulnerable. In other instances fear of crime may be triggered by the way in which a crime is reported in the media when the victim is an older person. Fear of crime can also prevent some older people from actively participating in activities outside the home. Thus the fear of going outdoors to avoid crime could result in less involvement in communal activities or fewer visits to health services and a subsequent deterioration in physical and mental health." @default.
