- W2260505652 abstract "The objective of this project was to obtain a preliminary indication of the suitability of wood from dryland conifers for the production of kraft pulp, relative to existing commercial Pinus radiata pulpwood resources from higher rainfall regions. Trees representing five conifer genotypes identified as having potential for dryland climatic conditions were sampled from sites in South Australia and Western Australia with mean annual rainfalls of 650 mm and 750 mm respectively. The species were: Pinus canariensis (Canary Island pine), Pinus brutia (Brutian, Red, Turkish, or Calabrian pine), Pinus pinaster (Maritime pine), Pinus radiata (Guadalupe provenance) and Pinus radiata (Cedros provenance). A sixth sample was collected from a higher rainfall site in NSW to represent Pinus radiata (Mainland provenance), which comprises the bulk of the resource planted in temperate regions of Australia. The sample with the lowest density was the mainland provenance of P. radiata (375 kg.m-3). The highest was the P. canariensis (534 kg.m-3). The densities of the remaining four samples were all within 24 kg.m-3 of each other and ranged from 441 to 465 kg.m-3. The sample with the highest pulp yield (at a Kappa number of about 90) was the mainland provenance of P. radiata (59.4%). The sample with the lowest yield was the P. canariensis (54.6%). The pulp yields of the remaining four samples covered a range of only 1.1%, from 56.0 to 57.1%. The results of the papermaking tests appeared to be predominantly influenced by the densities of the wood samples, with P. canariensis exhibiting the highest bulk and tearing resistance and the lowest tensile strength, whereas P. radiata (Mainland) had lower bulk and tear and the highest tensile strength. Plantation growing costs are often expressed in $/m3, and in these terms the dryland pines could be worth 10-20% more than P. radiata simply because higher density means more fibre per cubic metre of wood. However, the particular P. radiata Mainland sample used as a benchmark had a rather lower density than might be considered representative of the resource as a whole, so the advantage of the dryland pines may be overestimated. Further, the lower growth rate of the dryland conifers relative to Mainland P. radiata from wetter regions would mean lower revenues across a given rotation. Finally, pulp mills usually purchase their wood supplies across the weighbridge, and in weight terms dryland conifers would command prices 5-8% lower than that of P. radiata because of their lower pulp yields." @default.
