- W2260752812 abstract "Cylindrical samples of isotactic polypropylene were irradiated in the reactor of the Societa Sorin at Saluggia (mixed irradiation: fast and slow neutrons and gamma rays); the dose varied from 0 to 2200 Mrad. The density of the irradiated samples decreased from 0.914 g/cm/sup 3/ above 270 Mrad and passed through a min (0.889 g/cm/sup 3/) at 1320 Mrad. The velocity of sound (1 mm Hg) decreased from 2200 m/sec to 1300 m/sec at 1320 Mrad, then rose; likewise Young's modulus decreased from 4.47 x 10/sup -10/ d/cm/sup 2/ to 1.50 x 10/sup -10/ d/cm/ sup 2/ (min) at 1320 Mrad. Velocity of sound and coefficient of internal dissipation were plotted with respect to temperature from -- 180 deg C to 160 deg C for each sample. In low-dose samples (to 269 Mrad) the velocity of sound decreases linearly with increasing temperature to a point T/sub g/ (-40 deg C to 0 deg C) when the slope becomes steeper. Another singular point near -130 deg C is noted for higher-dose samples. In low-dose samples internal dissipation increases slowly to - 20 deg C, then increases rapidly and passes through a maximum at 40 deg C. In medium-dose samples (360 Mrad, 864more » Mrad) the internal dissipation curve shows secondary relaxation phenomena at low temperatures and has a double max between 40 deg C and 80 deg C. In high-dose samples (1320 to 2200 Mrad) there is one max; at high temperatures the 2200 Mrad sample behaves like vulcanized rubber. These results are interpreted in terms of the destruction of crystallinity in the samples: intermediate-dosage samples have increasing numbers of tranverse bonds formed by irradiation; high-dose samples have no remaining crystallinity. The results are in accord with published data for polyethylene. (BBB)« less" @default.
