- W2260796674 abstract "There is the common ground that education must be accessible to all children in all parts of the world under the purview of international rights, legislature and declarations such as the International Human Rights and the United Nation’s Convention on the Rights of Children (UNCRC). The emphasis is that it is a right issue and has the tendency of reducing inequality. There is also the subtle assertion that the more educated a population, the higher the standard of living, implying that every country should strive to get all children accessing education as a key agenda for development. Inclusive education is a contemporary concept that comprehensively considers the education of all children important. However, the concept is so fluid that it takes different meanings in different countries and at different times. Inclusive education discourse transverse the conceptual strands of special education, integration and inclusion. These concepts are used interchangeable although they mean different things and are explicitly explained by different theories. This paper attempts to draw a defining line on what inclusive education is as a concept in Ghana using qualitative methodologies and documentary study. It does that by examining the Modernist, Post-modernist and Critical theories on inclusive education, concepts of inclusive education in current discourse, and national documentations on inclusive education. It was found that there are three main motives for inclusive education in Ghana; the quest for the education for all children under the call of the United Nation’s Education for All, the rights motive, and the efficiency motive. It also emerged from the study that Ghana’s concept of inclusive education is multi-conceptual; depicting a mixed between special education, integration and inclusive education." @default.
