- W2261125957 abstract "Educational videos have been conventionally used in management studies to provide students with a visual experience of work organizations and the issues that emerge in their day-to-day. However, many of these videos tend to be based on descriptive and normative case-studies that portray organizations as static, neatly bounded, consensual systems in which people have specialised roles to achieve specific objectives, and where decisions are made rationally by sensible managers. In this paper I make a case for the use of mainstream commercial films in management courses as an alternative to conventional training videos. I propose that commercial films are particularly useful in Organization Studies subjects with a high theoretical content, as they enable a pedagogical approach that shifts away from business centric perspectives and focuses on the development of critical thinking and appreciation of a diversity of perspectives on organizational issues. Films also encourage a more realistic appraisal of organizations as complex, unstable and dynamic political systems, characterised by a multitude of (often conflicting) interests and heterogeneity of goals." @default.
