• W2261569457 abstract "The current study is the first controlledevaluation of the effectiveness of a brief mindfulness interventionamong college students who are binge drinkers. Participants were 76undergraduate college students who were randomly assigned to aMindfulness Group or an assessment only Control Group. Assessmentswere administered to both groups at the initial intervention andweekly for the subsequent four weeks. The Mindfulness Groupreceived information about mindfulness and participated in a seriesof mindfulness meditation experiential exercises during the initialintervention. The Mindfulness Group participated in anothermindfulness meditation practice two weeks following the initialintervention and was asked to engage in out-of-session mindfulnessmeditation practice for four weeks. Treatment outcome assessedchanges in alcohol-related behaviors and attitudes. Mediators andmoderators of treatment outcome were examined as well. Initial efficacy was supported by significantlyfewer binge episodes, less consequences of alcohol use and higherself-efficacy among the Mindfulness Group. Results suggested thatlevel of readiness to change and rate of binge episodes prior tothe intervention affect response to treatment. Contrary to studyhypotheses, the Mindfulness Group did not report changes in overalldispositional mindfulness, thought avoidance or readiness tochange. Consistent attendance, low rates of attrition, compliancewith out-of-session mindfulness meditation practice and highratings of satisfaction by participants in the Mindfulness Groupdemonstrated feasibility of the intervention.
