- W2262594738 abstract "Introduction Many companies today provide software packages, known as a course management system (CMS), to help facilitate the online learning process. Most of the packages provide a helpful and user-friendly course development tool with which faculty can move traditional, campus-based course material to the Internet. It is difficult, however, to know which software package or course management system is the best one to choose for a particular environment. Currently more than 38 different course management systems compete in the marketplace, although the number is somewhat inflated because many of the companies have multiple product listings (i.e. Embanet hosting ANGEL, Blackboard, FirstClass, IntraLearn and WebCT, or different versions of WebCT). A listing of the different systems appears in the and section of this review. Course Management Systems are sometimes referred to as Learning Management Systems (LMS) and Learning Content Management Systems (LCMS) although these terms tend to be more commonly used in the corporate world. An LMS generally provides the service functions that go with offering education and training (registrations, grading or course completion data, transcripting and sometimes even billing services) and the delivery system, but does not always provide a course development function. An LCMS tries to do both, and a CMS tends to focus almost exclusively on the course development and delivery. Many CMS programs offer a patch to interface with the student infermation system (SIS) that is already being used on a campus. Selecting the CMS that is right for one's particular needs (or changing to a different CMS, for that matter) can be a daunting task. What follows is a summary of important factors to consider. The list is not meant to be all-inclusive, but rather serves as a guideline to help narrow the parameters in making a decision. Selecting a CMS Many factors may influence a choice, not the least of which is cost; but even that important issue is difficult to sort out since some companies charge a per-user fee, some charge a per-faculty fee, and some charge a flat licensing fee. Numerous costs may not be included in the price that is quoted. Be certain to get all of the extras included in a bid price. Other important considerations include the database requirements, the server requirements and where the content is hosted, what services are offered by the various communication tools, what kind of technical support and help desk support will come with a particular package, and the company's history and longevity. Although longevity does have considerable merit, in an age when technology changes practically at the speed of light, newer ideas and innovations should not be ignored. Companies and products Many of the familiar company/ software names from previous experience are no longer around. For example, over the years Blackboard, founded in 1997, has acquired CourseInfo, Web-Course-in-a-Box, and Prometheus. eCollege, founded in 1996 as RealEducation, built the first online campus in that year. Today eCollege supports more fully accredited degree programs than any other e-learning provider in the country, using technology to make education more accessible, engaging and interactive for its users. Ucompass.com, Inc. has the product, Educator. The company has been in business since 1995, focusing on the e-learning market since 1997. The Educator Course Management System works with any release of UNIX or Linux Operating Systems, as well as others. Educator has elected not to give its software a version number but is constantly upgrading and improving the product. Convene, the original CMS that supported the University of Phoenix online course offerings, now focuses exclusively on the training market for corporate clients. Many educational institutions are still bitter about the rather abrupt manner in which Convene discontinued support of its software and services to colleges and universities. …" @default.
