- W2262953151 abstract "A review of failure mechanisms of thermally damaged curved plate heat treated wheels is detailed using failure analysis, laboratory testing and theoretical simulations. The influence of wheel diameter, rim thickness and brake shoe location on the thermal tolerance of curved plate wheels is shown. Crowding of the flange by the brake shoe causes a concentration of heat in this region which explains the failure modes experienced. Using the information gained from failure analysis, physical testing and theoretical analysis a thermal tolerance curve was developed for 33, 36 and 38 inch curved plate heat treated wheels. This curve shows the approximate brake input and heating duration required to reverse the as-manufactured stress state from bulk compression to tension." @default.
