- W2263036704 abstract "An estimated 800000 care assistants are currently working in public and private health and social services and as employees of private clients. In some places care assistants administer oral medication and injections. Care assistants are growing in number and increasingly taking over tasks traditionally performed by nurses. These assistants however are not required by law to be registered or qualified and some have been found abusing people under their care hitting them stealing from them and even killing them. A small minority of the overall body of care assistants is obtaining national vocational qualifications as defined by the Department of Health for health care assistants but most have no recognized training. Formed in 1991 the National Register for Carers (NRC) registers care assistants and contracts with employers to help ensure that proper professional care is being provided by care assistants. The more than 26000 carers who have thus far been registered each receive a tamper-proof photo-ID card showing how much training they have had and whether they are fully or provisionally registered." @default.
