- W2263770157 abstract "The most basic need for freshwater is the requirement for water supply and sanitation for the growing world's population. While water withdrawals for irrigation and industrial supply account for 92 percent of total freshwater use, residential (or domestic) water use, which represents the remaining eight- percent of total withdrawals, is the highest priority use. The needs for domestic water supply of the current population of six billion people hold a special significance in sustainable management of freshwater resources. Nearly one half (47 percent) of the world's population lives in urban areas, and large quantities of water have to be brought and distributed to urban dwellings. There are few alternatives for satisfying the domestic demands other than through piped distribution systems, which deliver water that is safe for drinking and other domestic uses. With approximately 750 million people without access to safe drinking water and many more without adequate supplies for health and community well being, the need to address the problem of domestic water supply will likely intensify in the near future. This paper examines the range of domestic water demands in a sample of 1,200 single-family residences in 12 North American cities and compares the findings to the results of previous studies in other regions of the world. The North American study, sponsored by the American Water Works Association Research Foundation, represents a unique investigation of the quantities of water used for specific purposes such as toilet flushing, showering and bathing, clothes washing, dish washing, yard watering and other residential uses. The results provide a basis for determining whether urban residents use water efficiently and what are the differences between the efficient and inefficient uses of water. The discussion of the variability in the observed water use is focused on the question: How much or how little water is needed to satisfy the domestic water demands of the urban population in North America and other regions of the world." @default.
