- W2264626837 abstract "This paper describes research undertaken by DSIR aimed at developing cost-effective means of assessing heavy vehicle suspensions with respect to their road damage potential. An effective suspension assessment technique could lead, through the encouragement of better suspensions, to significant reductions in road maintenance costs. It is generally accepted that the wear caused to a pavement by a vehicle passing over it is proportional to a relatively high power of the axle loading of the vehicle. The forces that a vehicle imparts to the pavement vary dynamically and depend on vehicle speed, road roughness, and the suspension characteristics. A number of previous studies have measured these dynamic wheel forces and compared various suspension types. However, the instrumentation and methods used, while suitable in a research environment, are not suitable for routine appraisal of vehicle suspensions. In this work a liquid tanker trailer was extensively instrumented and its dynamic behaviour measured over a selection of test roads at several speeds. Subsequently the vehicle was excited in the laboratory using servo-hydraulic rams to match the on-road behaviour. From these data dynamic wheel forces were estimated by several alternative methods and compared with values obtained by one of the methods used by other researchers. This leads to possible methods for the routine assessment of heavy vehicle suspensions for their pavement wear potential." @default.
