- W2264783310 abstract "Schedl follows previous literature in her description of the Monasteryplan of St. Gall with supplementary but rarely substantiated own observations. According to her the plan created in the Reichenau monastery was deliberately designed from the outset as a main conceptional unity project in the form, style and content that we see today. It reflects in its drawings contemporary monasterial discussions about the proper life and behaviour under the Rule of St. Benedict, especially considering the so called anianic reform movement conclusions. The so conceived plan should also have served as memory aid (« mnemotechnical » task or device) both for those who had drawn it as well as for those to whom it was adressed. In Schedls view, the arrangement of the buildings according to their functions was not only based on Benedictine rules but also followed hints and explanations adopted from the ancient author Vitruvius’ treatise on architecture. That’s in short what Schedls book is saying. In his ‘review’ of Schedls book, the author highlights its merits but also reveals argumentative weak points, errors, misunderstandings and misinterpretations, mostly based on authentic quotations. For example, in latest research, the mills on the plan are not meant as water-driven grain mills as Schedl takes for granted; nor could the arrangement of the buildings be based on ideas written by Vitruvius because the content of Vitruvius’ work - from times around the birth of Christ - couldn’t have been adapted in the early 9th century. At times, Schedl seems to contradict herself in her book. The weightings of her descriptions and explanations sometimes seem to be a little imbalanced and citations of previous scholars in some cases seem relatively unclear or not appropriately referenced. Schedl has introduced a handsome and neatly arranged book into the research landscape of the Monasteryplan of St. Gall. However her main thesis that the plan seems to represent the Regula Benedicti in the buildings, their arrangement and written tituli fails to convince. On this and on other arguments or statements there is much more to be noted - as these remarks will reveal." @default.
