- W2265024095 abstract "This chapter presents recent information concerning developmental morphology and tiller dynamics of warm-season grass swards. It focuses on switchgrass and big bluestem grown in monocultures. Other species, other cultivars within these species, or mixed species stands may exhibit different environmental responses to achieve reproductive success or competitive advantage. In general, developmental morphology is similar among grass species with only minor variations separating growth forms. Temperature and photoperiod are important factors controlling the rate of developmental morphology in warm-season grasses. Air temperature is the main environmental factor determining the rate of developmental morphology. Management practices are applied at the sward or population level, so methods that quantify developmental morphology are needed that account for the inherent variability in developmental morphology of perennial grasses. Attempts to visually quantify the morphology of grass swards will probably overestimate actual morphology since sward maturity typically describes the most visually dominant tillers in the population." @default.
