- W2265534266 abstract "In 2007, 78.4% of all of the poisoning cases documented by the American Association of Poison Control were due to ingestion of toxic substances (Bronstein et al. 2008). This fact, compounded by the knowledge that the gastrointestinal (GI) system is the principal site for ingestion and absorption of nutrients, renders the GI tract highly susceptible to toxic insults. While this organ system varies from region to region, the GI tract wall is an organized multilayered structure. This highly innervated structure includes the mucosa, lamina propria, submucosa, muscularis externa, and muscularis mucosae (Kutchai 1996). Each of these strata in the intestinal wall is subject to toxicity when exposed to specific toxins or toxicants. Exposure to these chemicals can produce clinical signs that vary from mild GI distress to severe gastric hemorrhage or death. Owing to the potential severity of some of these noxious chemicals, there are analytical methods in place to monitor or test for the presence of a variety of GI toxicants. This chapter will discuss the analytical techniques most commonly used in diagnostic toxicology to detect GI toxicants." @default.
