- W2266272785 abstract "Sharkey's article 'Social Networks and Social Service Workers' (British Journal of Social Work, 1989) makes a useful contribution to the appli cation of network analysis to social work practice. He draws a distinc tion between the use of the term network as a trendy concept and the rigours of network analysis. His study draws our attention to the vital recognition of the fragility of informal social networks; he re-iterates the importance of working sensitively with the informal caring network rather than taking over from it—a view that has already been stated in this journal (Timms, 1983) and he indicates that, by conceptualizing community in terms of social networks we can be freed from fruitless discussion about the definition of 'community' in developing social services. Developments in policy and legislation since publication make this area of study and practice even more important. Without such attention there is a risk that policy and legislation for care in the com munity will take a lifeless, but managerially simple, bureaucratic path, rather than reach the potential of the White Paper to produce a flexible, responsive pattern of care sharing. However, I take issue with Sharkey on two grounds: one technical relating to the process of network analysis and one ideological relating to patterns of intervention. While the comments below refer only to informal social networks, it is important to recognize that analysis of formal and organizational net works is also crucial to the understanding and development of social services." @default.
