- W2267258939 abstract "A serologic study of hepatitis and HIV infections was conducted among 99 intravenous drug users with hepatitis at the Francisco Muniz Infectious Diseases Hospital in Buenos Aires Argentina. The patients all presented clinical and laboratory evidence compatible with hepatitis at the hospital between December 1986 and September 1987. Only those with transaminase levels 10 times above normal were considered. 89 of the patients were male and 10 female. 4 of the males were bisexual. The median age was 21. Ages ranged from 14 to 32. All subjects were intravenous cocaine addicts and 10 also used morphine heroin or other drugs. Serologic tests for hepatitis A and B markers and for the delta agent indicated that 87 subjects had hepatitis B viral infections. 62 had acute forms and 25 had chronic forms as defined by serologic criteria. Antibodies against the delta agent were found in 4 chronic cases and 5 acute cases of hepatitis B. 2 subjects had acute cases of hepatitis A and 10 had non A non B hepatitis. Anti-HIV antibodies were found in 47 subjects including 29 with acute hepatitis B 14 with chronic hepatitis B and 4 with non A non B hepatitis. Anti-HIV antibodies were not detected in the 2 patients with hepatitis A or in the 4 with chronic hepatitis B who also had antibodies against the delta virus. But 4 of the 5 with acute hepatitis B and antibodies against the delta virus also had anti-HIV antibodies. 47% of the males and 50% of the females tested positive for HIV as did 2 of the 4 bisexual males. Only 10% of the 47 subjects testing positive for HIV reported having travelled outside Argentina indicating that the infection was acquired locally. The 47% prevalence of HIV infection was higher than that found in other studies of intravenous drug users in Argentina. Detection of the delta marker in 10% of the 87 subjects with hepatitis B was surprising since Argentina has not been considered endemic for the delta virus. Because intravenous drug abuse is increasing in Argentina the delta agent will probably increase in prevalence in the near future." @default.
