- W2268284816 abstract "A programme was undertaken for manufacture of diesel/electric locomotive wheels which consisted of evolution of an improved alloy design, along with optimum heat treatment schedule and evaluation of properties. Experimental heats with C-Mn and C-Mn-Nb-V chemistries were produced in open hearth furnace adopting low hydrogen steel making process to ensure residual hydrogen less than 2ppm. The ingots were processed through the conventional operations of forging, rolling and dishing to produce wheels. These wheels were austenitized and rim spray quenched by high velocity water jets followed by tempering treatment. The wheels thus produced were subjected to a series of quality evaluatory tests. The results have shown an overall improvement in mechanical and metallurgical properties of wheels based on C-Mn-Nv-V-chemistry as compared to basic C-Mn chemistry. The improvement in yield strength was found to be more pronounced than that in UTS. The overall improvement in mechanical and metallurgical properties may be attributed mainly to beneficial effects of Nb and V. The improved hardness may be attributed to precipitation of carbides and carbonitrides of niobium and vanadium as well as refinement of pearlitic structure and preaustenite grain size. The scanning electron microscopy revealed sufficiently ductile structure in steel. The present work indicates the suitability of C-Mn-Nb-V-steel chemistry for heavy duty locomotive wheels." @default.
